YARNSCOMBE SS 52 SE 4/273 Barn and adjoining horse-engine - house and stable approximately 10 metres to north-east of Lower Ward Farmhouse

GV II

Barn and stable. Probably late C18 or early C19, with later alterations. Cob on roughly squared and coursed stone plinth, partly rebuilt in stone rubble. Gable- ended Welsh-slate roof, probably formerly thatched. Stone rubble horse-engine house with hipped corrugated-iron roof. Plan: Barn to west with horse-engine house to rear and shippon with loft over adjoining to east. Facing south. Barn with opposed cart entrances, probably formerly with 2 pairs of double doors to front (right hand entrance since blocked). Left-hand end and rear of barn rebuilt, probably in the later C19. Eaves raised probably in the late C19 or early C20 (see band of different coloured cob under eaves). Exterior: Barn to left formerly with pair of cart entrances to front, divided and flanked by projecting piers with pent-roofed porch over. Left-hand entrance has large boarded double doors (one 2-leaf) with strap hinges and right-hand entrance is blocked. Boarded loft door to left with strap hinges. Stable to right with loft doorway, 2 ground-floor window openings with wooden lintels and central ground floor doorway. Left-hand window with c1900 brick dressings and right-hand window reduced in height at some time. Blocked doorway to left of left-hand window (see straight joints and wooden lintel). Opposed large boarded double doors to rear of barn with wooden lintel. Interior: C19 six-bay barn roof with trusses consisting of principal rafters, tie- beams and raking struts. Horse-engine house with heavy longitudinal beam, roof truss with low collar and raking struts (second truss since dismantled). This barn and stable form part of a farmstead group, also including Lower Ward Farmhouse (qv).
