Thrimby Grange

II

Farmhouse. Dated and inscribed over Salkeld coat-of-arms under the eaves
G. & I.S. 1578 (date mentioned in RCHM and on previous list but too high to be
seen from ground), with C17 alterations and C19 additions. Mixed limestone and
sandstone rubble walls, under C20 tile roof with banded limestone chimney
stacks. 2 storeys, 3 bays (originally 4 or 5 bays). Off-centre panelled door
in C19 stone surround. Ground-floor 3- and 4-light mullioned-and-transomed
windows, under similar 3-light windows, all with hoodmoulds. Smaller blocked
possible firewindows, in hollow-chamfered surrounds, appear contemporary. Walls
seem to have been raised and into the added stonework has been placed the
coat-of-arms, in a round rope moulding. Left return wall has upper-floor
projecting garderobe chute. Rear has 2 blocked chamfered-surround doorways.
Various blocked windows above. Left 3-light mullioned-and-transomed windows
under hoodmoulds. Right C19 kitchen extension and left barn. Interior has high
beamed ceilings. See RCHM, Westmorland, 1936, p.227. Barn is not of interest.
