NY 42 SW MATTERDALE A592 (north west side) Watermillock 6/146 Watermillock House and adjoining part of Magnolia Cottage -
- II* House. Late C17 with late C18 addition. Roughcast stone rubble, with slate roof. North-east elevation of 2 storeys with attic and 3 bays, the end bays project under asymmetrical gables carried down to form wide eaves on curved brackets. Moulded bargeboards. Central bay has 3-light single-chamfered mullioned windows flanking entrance, and fire window to right; continuous dripcourse, raised over entrances; 1st floor has 4-light window with single light to right. Wings have sashed windows with glazing bars, each gable has 2 bull's eyes. Central entrance has roll moulded jambs and lintel with sunk ogee enclosing lettering: "I & ED" and flanked by escutheons with figures: "16" and "86"; 6-panel door has 3 round-headed upper panels and date: 1686 to top, original drop handle and knocker; strap hinges. Entrance to inner return of left wing has 4-paned door with wooden pull handle and drop handle, corresponding entrance to right wing has 6-fielded-panel door. Large cross- axial stack and similar stack to left wing. Rear has 5-bay later range under hipped roof. sashed windows with single glazing bars and central Venetian stair window; entrance to 4th bay. return lateral stacks. Interior: Hall has segmental arched fireplace with later corbelled fireplace within, also cupboards with butterfly hinges; segmental-headed entrance to left. End panelled partition mostly hidden, beams cased; cornices. Dining room, originally 2 rooms, has panelling to front part, and bolection-moulded fireplace. 1st floor has some original doors and closets, room with modillioned cornice and bolection-moulded fireplace. Stone spiral stair to attic. rear range has imperial stair with 2 lower flights and Adam-style plaster ceiling, tympanum over entrance to front range. Part of left wing forms part of Magnolia Cottage, part of a later range of no special interest.
