MATTERDALE A592 (south-east side) NY 42 SW Watermillock 6/152 Outward Bound School -
- II House, now school. Early C19 with later additions. Stucco with hipped slate roofs. North-west elevation of 3 storeys and 10 bays, but 1st 2 and last 3 bays of 2 storeys and same height. 1st 2 bays break forward, 5th to 7th bays recessed. Top cornice and blocking course; 2-storey bays have dentilled cornice. Windows are sashed with glazing bars. Entrance to 9th bay has overlight with glazing bars and small-paned side lights, panelled door; Tetrastyle porch has Doric columns and Ionic entablature; C20 iron balcony. Several cross-axial stacks with caps. South-west return of 5 bays; central 3 bays form canted projection with balcony supported by original cast iron columns (rest C20). windows to 1st floor of outer bays are sashed with glazing bars, the rest are C20 casements. South-east elevation has windows with architraves friezes and cornices to 1st 2 bays of ground floor, C20 casements; 3rd bay has single-storey projection under hipped roof, sashed windows have glazing bars and floating cornices, those to left return have thick glazing bars. French windows inserted in one opening. Rest of elevation altered, C20 extensions. North-east return has C20 single-storey extension.
