DEAN EAGLESFIELD NY 02 NE 8/110 Dalton House G.V. II 3-3-67
House and former cottage now one property. Late C17 cottage and mid C18 house. Painted roughcast walls, under rebuilt graduated greenslate roof with rebuilt brick chimney stacks. 2-storey, 2-bay house with lower right 2-storey, 3-bay cottage. House has rendered stone porch with plank door in C18 chamfered painted stone surround. Sash windows, those on upper floor in enlarged C19 painted stone surrounds. Former rear of cottage now forms part of the front. Right stair projection has small chamfered-surround window and slit vent. Extruded C19 rendered porch with plank door in plain opening under inscription JOHN DALTON DCL THE DISCOVERER OF THE ATOMIC THEORY WAS BORN HERE SEPT 5 1766, DIED AT MANCHESTER JULY 27 1844. Casement and sash windows in C19 painted stone surrounds. Former front has small C20 window in original C17 surround; other sash windows under C17 stone lintels in enlarged plain reveals. Interior of C18 house had fireplace dated and inscribed JMD 1741 (Jonathan and Mary Dalton) uncovered in 1974.
