School. Circa 1870, with classrooms and headmaster's house of later C19, some later
alterations. Slatestone rubble with granite dressings and quoins. Slate and
asbestos slate roofs with raised coped verges and kneelers, brick stacks; head
master's house has brick dressings.
The first building was in a U-plan, with main hall and classroom to front left and
right; a further classroom was built to the right, and 2 rear wings at the back of
the hall: The headmaster's house was attached to the rear wing to left; this is an
L-plan, with porch set in the angle, with one room in the front wing and 2 to rear,
with single storey wash-house and coalhouse attached to left. Victorian Gothic style.
2 storeys, on plinth; the main hall has two 4-light chamfered granite casements to
front. The classroom to front left has gable end to front, with 3 C20 windows at
upper level; the inner side has 2 tall gabled dormers and 2 single lights, with a
doorway at the inner end with segmental head. The outer left side of the classroom
also has 2 tall gabled dormers and 3 single lights, and stepped external stack. The
classroom wing to front right has gable end to front with 3-light mullion and transom
window with hood mould, breather above; this wing is of 2-room plan, each room heated
from the ridge stack, and with a small porch set in the angle to the main hall, with
segmental-headed doorway. Attached to right, classroom of later C19, with two 2-
light chamfered granite casements, and gable end to right side with 2-light mullion
and transom window and breather above; this classroom is heated by stack to rear,
with small single storey lean-to to rear.
The rear of the main hall has two 3-light chamfered granite casements and external
stack, with door with overlight to right. There are 2 rear wings, one to left
shorter; wing to left has 3-light granite casement to outer side, 3-light casement
and door to inner side, and breather in gable end; heated by ridge stack at junction
with main hall. The rear wing to right has two 4-light granite casements and door to
inner side, heated by stack at inner gable end. The headmaster's house to rear left
is of 2 storeys, with gabled front wing, with 4-pane sash with sidelights at ground
floor and paired plate-glass sash at first floor. Glazed porch with hipped roof in
angle to rear wing to left, which has gable end with 16-pane sash at ground and first
floor in brick surrounds with cambered heads. Single storey outhouse attached to
left, with brick stack for wash-house and coalhouse to end left.
Interior Not inspected.
A good example of a Victorian school, where the functions of the buildings are clear
and the C19 additions contribute to the asymmetrical Gothic style.
