Details
ST COLUMB MAJOR BANK STREET (west side), SW 9063-9163 St Columb Major 17/184 St Columb Gallery and Museum - GV II
St Columb Institute, now gallery and museum. Dated 1874, with few later alterations. Brick with granite dressings. Bitumenised slate roof with crested ridge tiles and gable ends. Gable end stacks with brick shafts. Plan: There is a central room/entrance hall, with one large room to right and left. A passage through the right end. Gothic style. Exterior: 2 storeys; symmetrical 3:3:3 bays with the central bays broken forward under a larger gable, with a small central gable over each of the three bays to right and left. Plinth and band course. The centre has tall 2-centred arched doorway with brick hood mould, double plank doors with good ironwork. 2 centred arched window with plate-glass sashes to right and left with cill strings. At first floor there are three 2-centred arched lights, the central one taller, with string courses at impost level; recessed quatrefoil below with the date and plain stone quatrefoil above. 2-centred arch in the brickwork above. The 3 bays to left have central 2- centred arched doorway with similar single door. Plate-glass sash to right and left with square head and hood mould. The 3 bays to right have 3 similar plate-glass sashes. At first floor the bays to right and left have three 2-centred arched windows with string courses at impost level and a blind circle above. At the right end is a 2-centred arched granite doorway to the passage. The left end has 4-pane sash with segmental arch at ground floor; first floor has two 2-centred arched windows with plate-glass sashes. The rear has a shallow 2-storey wing to left, at first floor a C20 glazed door, 4-pane sash with segmental head and glazed dormer above with 2-light casement. To right the rear of the main range is blind. Interior: Not accessible.
