ST COLUMB MAJOR MARKET PLACE (north side), SW 9063-9163 St Columb Major 17/278 Three lychgates and walls - surrounding the churchyard to south, west and north of Church of St Columba GV II
Three lychgates and walls at the south, west and north sides of the churchyard. C19. Granite and slatestone rubble with granite dressings. At the south east entrance to the churchyard in Market Place, there is a flight of 6 wide granite steps with flanking wall to right in rubble with chamfered granite coping, about one metre high, stepped, in two ranges. Short section of rubble wall to each side of the gateway, with C20 wooden gates and central granite coffin rest. with flat top of two slabs of granite. The churchyard walls continue about 40 metres to west, about 1½ metres high, with chamfered granite coping and weathered buttresses at intervals. The wall terminates with a pair of granite ashlar Gothic piers, of square plan, about 3 metres high, with weathered buttresses to outer sides and blank quatrefoils at the top with plain pyramidal caps. These piers form the entrance to West Street. Similar wall continued, running north/south for about 100 metres along the west side of the churchyard, diminshing in height towards the north. The wall is returned along the north side of the churchyard about 15 metres to the north lychgate. This is in granite ashlar, with a pier with pyramidal cap to each side of a cusped 4- centred arch, with gable over with raised coped verges and finial. C20 wooden gate.
