Details

ST BURYAN/ST LEVAN PENBERTH COVE SW 32 SE 7/109 Gatehouse at road entrance to - Foxstones GV II Gatehouse. Circa 1912. Designed by-Drewitt. Granite rubble with granite dressings. Scantle slate pyramidal roof with exposed rafter ends under projecting eaves. Plan: Square-on-plan gatehouse spanning a stream. Wide carriageway passes over bridge within gatehouse. Exterior: 2 storeys. Round granite arch to middle of each elevation, mid-floor band above and 2 projecting channelled corbels resembling gargoyles. Right-hand (south east elevation has U-plan stone stair rising to central doorway of chamber over gateway. The main flights (left and right) oppose weathered buttresses at the opposite elevation. Above these the steps are cantelevered out and rise to a landing in front of the doorway. Front and left-hand elevations have central first floor windows. Original ledged door and 12-pane casements. Interior not inspected. Source: Name of architect supplied by Commander Favell, former occupier.
