GV II

House. Circa late C18 possibly incorporating earlier wing. Elvan ashlar front with dressed granite quoins, sills, jambstones and lintels, rubble sides and rear. Steep scantle slate roofs with brick chimneys over the gable ends. Modillioned wooden eaves cornice to the front. Plan: overall U-shaped plan: 2 room taller front with entrance hall leading to lean- to stair hall between 2 rear wings at right angles, the left hand wing truncated, the right hand wing longer and on higher ground. Exterior : 3 storeys. Nearly symmetrical 3 window east front. Doorway slightly left of middle and right hand window wide with later inserted granite mullion. C20 door with overlight (reused ship's timber as inner lintel). Circa late C19 or C20 4-pane horned sashes. Right hand corner splayed for access, granite steps in front of doorway. Interior : partly inspected, first and second floor only: possibly original open-well stair with rectangular balusters and ramped mahogany handrail; C18 moulded ceiling cornice over; some 6-panel doors and one 2-panel door. Date 1847 and initials IB found scratched on ridge of rear left-hand wing during recent repairs (1986).
