Marazion Bridge

II

Road bridge over Red River and flood plain. Datestone 1837. Granite ashlar walls with dressed granite voussoirs, string parapet copings and rusticated piers or buttresses resembling pilasters. Beyond the terminal piers of either parapet the wall are rubble with simpler squared granite copings fastened by iron cramps (like Marazion Old Bridge qv).

Plan: Single span bridge carrying a wide straight carriageway with the parapet walls running for a considerable distance beyond the valley (channel). The round arch of the bridge springs from buttressed abutments as responds, and there is a similar parapet buttress terminating the ashlar walling at either side making eight in all.

The bridge is symmetrical and similar to both the upstream (north) and the downstream sides. Each side has a central round arch with projecting keystone, a buttress at either side of the arch and buttresses at left and right beyond; the buttresses rise slightly above the parapets and have V-jointed rustications and squat pyramidal caps. Between the central buttresses there are strings below the parapets. Sloped copings. The datestone is central and has Arabic numerals in relief.

An unusually wide bridge for this date and with high quality details; built to take the main flow of traffic from Marazion Old Bridge qv.

The asset was previously listed twice also under the parish of Ludgvan at List Entry 1136354. This entry was removed from the List on 6 November 2017.

This entry was subject to a Minor Amendment on 6 November 2017.
