MADRON SW 43 SE 7/89 The Summer House - GV II

Summer house. Circa mid C18. Rendered walls. Granite steps and iron railing, some reused C16 or C17 granite features. Pyramidal scantle slate roof over a moulded eaves cornice. Brick chimney over the left hand side. Plan: square plan first floor room over ground floor or basement (now subdivided floors). Exterior: 2 storeys. Symmetrical 2 window north front with central reused C16 or early C17 moulded doorway. Old door. The central first floor doorway (with C20 door) is approached by a double flight of C18 steps with the landing bridge forming a porch for the ground floor doorway. Original C18 iron balustrade with ramped hand rail. The 2 first floor windows are original 12-pane hornless sashes with thick glazing bars. In the right hand wall is a C16 or early C17 moulded 2-light mullioned window with round-headed arched lights. Interior: first floor has original coved ceiling with egg and dart over bead and reel cornice. C18 chimney piece at either side with the Harris crest over each (one crest obscured). The reused features probably from Kenegie House increase the interest of a building type uncommon in Cornwall.
