Details

LESNEWTH SX 19 SW 2/95 Trafalgar - II House. Circa 1810-1820. Slate stone rubble. Slate roof with hipped ends and overhanging eaves. Four diagonally-set rendered brick axial stacks on ridge. Double depth plan: central entrance hall with two main reception rooms on front and two smaller service rooms to rear; the front and rear rooms heated by back-to-back fireplaces. Stair to rear of passage with shallow projection on rear elevation. Cellar probably originally containing dairy. Two storeys and basement. Symmetrical three window front; original 2-light casements with top light, margin glazing bars and crown glass. Granite cills. Central entrance has C19 6-panel door. Two tall 2-light casements on ground floor with 3 casements on first. Side elevations unaltered with sashes renewed in late C20. Possible cloam oven projection on left hand side wall, probably serving kitchen on rear left. External stone rubble steps to basement. Unaltered rear elevation; central shallow projection for stair, C19 door to left and replaced sash to right. Interior largely intact. Entrance hall has fluted cornice and hall arch. Left hand room; early C19 plaster ceiling band, largely intact, decorated with stylised volutes with beaded cornice below. Right hand room has early C19 plaster ceiling band complete on two sides of the room; decorated with a vine leaf and corn sheave trail stopped at corners with rosettes. Cornice decorated with egg and dart motif. Early C19 open string stair with stick balusters and wreathed mahogany rail. Doors, doorcases, window shutters and slate flag floors complete. Trafalgar is a well preserved early C19 house in magnificent setting overlooking the Valency valley.
