4/162 The Nook and cottage adjoining on
west
GV II
Probably 3 cottages, remodelled to form 2 cottages. First cottage (part of The Nook)
on the east (right) end probably early C18, middle cottage (part of The Nook and part
of the adjoining cottage) circa mid C18 and third cottage at west (left) end circa
late C18. Local slate-stone rubble. Bitumen coated rag slate roof with gable ends.
Stone rubble stack, originally gable end stack to right of centre; stone rubble axial
stack, originally gable end stack to left of centre and stone rubble stack on left
hand gable end.
Plan much altered. The Nook on the right was built adjoining Windyridge (qv) to the
rear of the higher (right hand) side. This cottage (The Nook) appears to have been
of 1 room plan heated by a gable end stack on the left. A second cottage or second
room was added on the left hand gable end and heated by an end stack to the left. In
circa late C18 a third cottage or room was added on the left, also heated by an end
stack. The 3 cottages were then divided to form 2 cottages, the central cottage
converted into 2 entrance halls for the 2 flanking cottages. A single storey service
outshot was added to rear of The Nook in circa late C19.
2 storeys. Asymmetrical 2 window south front; cottage on west (left) has a circa
late C19 or early C20 4-pane sash and part glazed door on ground floor and 2-light
casement above. The Nook on east (right) has a C20 glazed door, sash without glazing
bars and 2-light casement to right in blocked entrance. 2-light casement in half
dormer with raking roof above. Rear (north) elevation to road with C20 glazed doors
and two 16-pane hornless sashes to west cottage.
Interior : The Nook has roughly cut slightly chamfered ceiling beams. The stack
which backs onto the entrance passage has a cloam oven projection and roughly cut
lintel. The roof trusses above the right hand range have principals partly halved,
lap-jointed and pegged at apices and collars lapped and pegged onto the face of the
principals. The cottage adjoining on the west has C19 ceiling beams and a C20 grate
to the fireplace in the lower gable end. First floor of west (left hand) cottage not
inspected.
Forms part of group with Windyridge (qv).
