ST BREWARD LOWER LANK SX 07 NE 5/209 De Lank Farmhouse - II

Farmhouse. Circa late C16, possibly with earlier origins. Extended in mid to late C19 for W H Pole-Carew of Anthony (See Maclean). Earlier range of local stone and granite rubble with dressed granite quoins. Slate roof with gable ends. Granite parapet coping on left hand gable end. Ashlar granite end stacks with moulded granite caps. Parallel range to rear of snecked and ashlar granite with higher slate roof with gable ends and ashlar granite end stacks. Plan: Earlier range of 2 room and through passage plan. Built along slope with ground sloping down gently to left. Lower left hand room is larger and is heated by end stack and has what may be the remains of stair a turret in cupboard to rear towards higher end of the room. Higher right hand room heated by rear lateral stack, the shaft removed and originally with newel stair, now removed. Passage flanked by thick walls, the right hand wall on the higher side continuing up to the apex. Chamber above right hand room originally heated by circa late C16 gable end stack, the fireplace now blocked. The roof structure was not accessible at time of survey (1986) although the trusses above the left hand room appear to have been replaced in the C19. In circa late C19 a parallel range was added to the rear with a 2 room and central entrance plan, heated by end stacks with a wide central entrance hall. Exterior: 2 storeys. Earlier range has an asymmetrical 3 window front. Entrance to right of centre. To left, two 1-light windows with chamfered granite surrounds flank a 3-light mullion window with hoodmould. Circa late C19 ashlar granite porch with square-headed chamfered granite inner doorframe. Small 2-light mullion window and 3- light mullion window with hoodmould to right. 3 gabled dormers on first floor, with chamfered granite surrounds to 2-light mullion windows, the central mullion removed. Rear elevation; Circa late C19 range has a regular 3-window front with 2 wide 3-light casements with granite surrounds and central gabled porch with plank door. 3 gabled half dormers on first floor. Interior: Earlier range has chamfered granite doorframes with diagonal stops into right and left hand rooms and chamfered granite segmental arched doorframe with hoodmould to original rear door. Wavy chamfered ceiling beams in lower left hand room and passage with straight cut stops and plaster ceiling in right hand room. End fireplace on left with segmental granite arch and hollow chamfered jambs. Rear lateral fireplace on right with chamfered granite lintel and jambs with diagonal stops and remains of cloam oven. Chamfered granite square headed doorframe with diagonal stops to probable earlier stair projection to rear of left hand room. First floor chamber fireplace above right hand room blocked.
