Details

CARDINHAM SX 16 NW 6/21 New Bridge - II

Bridge over the River Fowey. Late C15 ; much rebuilt, and now appears to be a largely C19 structure. Slatestone and granite rubble. Three arches. On the upstream side, there are 2 round granite arches to south with granite voussoirs, and one smaller round arch to north with a slate arch ring, which may be the remains of the early bridge. On the downstream side, one smaller arch with slate arch ring survives to south, the other two round arches larger with granite voussoirs. On the upstream side there are two large triangular cutwaters, 2 smaller cutwaters on the downstream side. The bridge is about 18 metres long and about 4 metres wide. Low parapet walls in rubble with rough granite coping. New Bridge is at the head of Glynn Park and was built at the end of the C15, mentioned by Leland as "of stone archid" in 1535. Since then the arches have been widened and patched. Sources: Henderson, C and Coates, H.: Old Cornish Bridges and Streams 1928.
