Farmhouse. Circa late C16 to mid C17. Rendered and painted stone rubble and cob,
front wall of local stone rubble. Rag slate roof with gable ends with slightly lower
roof with hipped end to left. Projecting stone rubble end stack with brick shaft on
right and axial stack with brick shaft to left of centre. Axial stack with brick
shaft on rear slope.
Plan: Original plan probably of 2-room and through passage plan heated by end stacks
with larger hall kitchen on left and smaller parlour on right. In circa C18 or C19
an outshut extension was added across the rear, heated by a stack on the rear wall of
the earlier range and in the C19 the house was extended with a further room on the
left hand end of the earlier range. Dairy added to rear of this C19 extension in
circa late C19.
Exterior: 2 storey. Regular 1:3 window front with circa C19 extension on left.
Entrance to right of centre with C19 part glazed door with slate hood flanked by two
C20 3-light casements. Above, three C20 2-light casements, all in earlier openings.
In the C19 extension to left is a C20 door with a C20 window above. Prominent
straight joint between these two ranges.
Interior: Wide passage flanked by thin plastered partitions with circa C19 framed
stair inserted to rear. The hall kitchen on left has heavy chamfered floor joists
with no stops visible. The timber lintel to the fireplace is partly visible and has
several dates and initials scratched on including a date of 1790. The ceilings to
the passage and right hand parlour are plastered and the room to far left is the
probably C19 extension has circa C19 floor joists.
Roof Structure: Remains of a C17 and C18 roof; the earlier trusses with principals
halved, lap-jointed and pegged at the apices with halved lap-jointed and pegged
collars and trenched purlins, several of which are chamfered and well finished. The
later roof trusses have collars which are lap-jointed and pegged onto the face of the
principals and are far more roughly cut.
