WERRINGTON WERRINGTON PARK SX 38 NW 9/317 Ice house to north-east of - Werrington Park (house)

GV II

Ice house. Circa late C18 or early C19. Brick, probably locally manufactured, possibly from the brick works at Dutson. The bricks are laid in header bond. The ice house extends above and below ground, built into the slope of a bank and is circular in section with an entrance through a tunnel facing south. Covered by an artifical mound. The brick portal has a segmental arch doorway with a C20 plank door. The passage has possibly been extended to the south and there was originally a second door close to the entrance to the pit. There appears to have been a top light above the passage, near to the pit, which was probably used both for loading and for lighting. This eye is unsually placed. The well appears cylindrical rather than egg shaped in section, the top being domed and constructed entirely of brick, there being no evidence of a characteristic central eye hole. The bottom of the pit has accumulated a layer of debris and it is therefore uncertain whether there are the remains of drains or a water trap. About halfway up the walls on the interior there are holes for floor joists. The ice house stands close to Werrington Park (house) q.v, some 400 metres from the lake. It is particularly well constructed and a good example of its type.
