House. Circa 1790, with alterations and additions of circa mid C19 and late C19.
C20 alterations after a fire in 1983. Rendered stone rubble. Hipped slate roof with
lead rolls. Axial stacks with rendered shafts.
Plan: Large double depth plan, with central entrance to entrance hall and principal
room to front left and right. To rear left there is a further principal room, facing
the garden front at the left side. To rear right is the stair hall. Service rooms
to rear, with a later C19 wing to rear right and left. There was an attic storey
addition of late C19, now largely removed.
Exterior: 2 storeys on plinth, a symmetrical 2:1:2 bays, with the outer bays
advanced; heavy modillion cornice and blocking course, with a blind balustrade above
the central bay. Central Ionic portico with modillion cornice; inner half-glazed
double doors with sash to right and left. All windows are sashes with varied number
of panes, some of late C19, and some C20 replacement 12-pane sashes. The left side
forms the garden front, a symmetrical 2:2:2 bays with the central bays advanced. All
windows are 12-pane sashes except the two at ground floor to centre which are late
C19 sashes. The 2 windows at ground floor to right are blind. Modillion cornice
with pediment. Late C19 dormer remaining from the former top storey behind the
pediment. Attached to left is a 2-storey wing of later C19, in slatestone rubble
with hipped slate roof. The inner side has C20 window at first floor; the end has
two 12-pane sashes at ground floor with corbelled oriel above. At the right side the
modillion cornice is returned; there are two blind windows at ground floor, at first
floor a blind window to left and 12-pane sash to right. Set back to right is the
stair hall with large round-arched stair light with stained glass; 2-storey late C19
addition to right, as a narrow bathroom wing. At ground and first floor to right a
12-pane sash. To right, the rear C19 wing projects, canted in the corner with 16-
pane sash at ground and first floor. The inner side of the wing has three plate-
glass sashes at first floor and two windows at ground floor, with elliptical arches
and 24-pane sashes with sidelights. This wing is rendered and lined out. At the
rear, the central range is rendered, of three storeys and 2 windows; ground and first
floor have 20-pane sashes, with two 16-pane sashes at second floor. The wing to
right has two 16-pane sashes at ground and first floor and C20 door at the inner
side, with cambered brick arches. The wing to left has blind gable end with single
storey C19 addition at the left side with 12-pane sash. The inner side has C19 16-
pane sash at ground and first floor to left with flat brick arches and C20 door to
right. Wooden bellcote with lead ogee roof and weathervane.
Interior: Some internal details such as plaster cornices and panelled shutters, were
replaced after the fire of 1983. In the entrance hall to right and left there is a
doorcase with pediment, 6-panelled doors with panelled reveals. The room to front
right has introduced marble chimneypiece. The rooms to front and rear left have late
C18 plaster cornices with acanthus, chimneypieces and dado rails, and shutters to
windows; double doors between the two rooms. The stair hall has large open-well
stair with scrolled string, wreathed handrail and turned balusters; modillions below
the string. The first floor landing has screen of fluted Ionic columns. The rear of
the stair hall has a green baize door to the service rooms to rear. At first floor
all rooms have 6-panelled doors. The stair light has stained glass with the name
Jasper Baron, MDCCXC.
