8/175 Winding engine house to Smith's
shaft of West Frances Mine
at SW 672 391
GV II
Winding engine house to former tin mine, now derelict. Probably later C19.
Uncoursed killas rubble with granite quoins, bob wall of large dressed granite
blocks, window arches of brick, brick upper stage to chimney. Rectangular plan
on north-east/south-west axis, with bob wall to north-east, chimney attached at
south-west corner. Small building of only 2 stages, with round-headed openings
including driver's window in bob wall, damaged window in west side wall.
Tapered cylindrical chimney, apparently intact, with no cornice between stone
and brick stages. History: believed to have operated stamps also. The only visible
remains on this formerly busy site, and although now standing in mournful
isolation, forms a visual link in the middle of a chain of engine houses remaining
along the line of the Great Flat Lode.
