House. Circa early C16, extended in late C20. Stone rubble and granite. Slate roof with gable ends. Projected stone rubble end stack on left and granite axial stack with moulded string to left of centre. Plan: original plan uncertain. House comprises a 2 room plan with larger room on right (east) heated by an axial stack with a possibly smoke blackened 3-bay arch braced roof suggesting that it was originally an open hall. Smaller room on left (west) heated by projecting end stack, the roof above replaced in the late C20. C20 extension to rear. The position of the original entrance is uncertain although there is a circa C19 porch on the front towards the right of the open hall. Although the ground rises slightly to the right (east) the house would appear to conform to a characteristic 3 room and cross or through passage plan with the open hall and inner room to left surviving, the passage to right of the hall and the service end demolished. However, the owners insist that there was no evidence prior to recent alterations of the house continuing to right; the right hand gable end of the house was rebuilt in the late C20 and the high bank to right has been excavated. Exterior: 2 storeys. Asymmetrical 3 window front, with windows largely replaced in C20; 2-light casement and C20 door to left, 2-light casement, part glazed door and circa C19 stone rubble porch with gable end and C20 inner glazed door to right. First floor with three 2-light casements. Slightly higher roof over open hall on right. Interior: Ceiling beams replaced in C19 and C20. Hall fireplace with chamfered granite jambs and chamfered timber lintel. Blocked opening at side of fireplace with chamfered lintel, possibly position of entrance stair turret, now gone. Left hand room with C19 4-centred arch to fireplace with earlier timber lintel above. Roof Structure: above hall on right 2 arch braced roof trusses with diagonal ridge replaced and mortices for 2 sets of probably threaded purlins; there appears to be some patchy evidence of smoke-blackening although the trusses have been cleaned. The owners state that the roof timbers were much blacker prior to the recent alterations in the 1970s and 1980s. Roof structure above left hand room replaced in 1970-1980s.
