Details
SW 72 NW CONSTANTINE VICARAGE TERRACE, Constantine
8/116 Green Dale - GV II
Vicarage, now a private house. Circa 1830 probably circa late C18 at the back. Dressed granite, roughcast front with granite ashlar corner pilasters. Low pitched hipped slate roof with deep eaves. Rendered stacks with tapered caps. Plan: Double depth plan. 2 principal front rooms with an entrance hall between leading to the stair well at the back. Behind the large right hand room is the study and behind the left-hand room a pantry, back stairs and a passage to the kitchen in the wing at the back to the left. There is some evidence (straight masonry joint on right-hand wall) to suggest that the 2 front rooms are addition, in which case the house behind the 2 front rooms is earlier than circa 1830. Exterior: 2 storeys. The 4 window south front is symmetrical except that the doorway is to the left of centre. Tall 12-pane sashes are probably C20 replacements. Doorway to left of centre has a reeded doorcase, a C19 6-panel partly glazed door and a C19 glazed porch with large console brackets to eaves cornice and glazed double doors. The right hand east side has 1 first floor and 2 ground floor late C19 12-pane sashes to right (rear) and a straight masonry joint between the 2 parts of the house. The left-hand west elevation: The rear wing projects to the left, asymmetrical fenestration with early C19 12-pane sashes on the first floor, large early C19 24- pane sashes on the ground floor and an early C19 6-panel door to the right of centre with an 8-pane rectangular overlight and a boarded door to the left. Interior: The larger right-hand front room has a reeded cornice, the left hand room has a coved cornice and both rooms have C20 fireplaces. The kitchen has a large granite fireplace with a dressed granite lintel. The main open-well staircase has a closed string, stick balusters and turned newels. The servants' stair at the back is straight and has a similar balustrade. Most of the internal joinery appears to be intact including the panelled doors.
