8/389 Merther-Uny Farmhouse -
GV II
Farmhouse, formerly 2 houses. C18 incorporating some C17 masonry possibly from C17 house on the same site. Granite rubble with some granite dressings. Asbestos slate roofs sweeping lower at rear. Granite rubble and dressed granite chimneys over the gable ends and over the cross party wall. Plan: Double depth plan with service rooms and stairs in later rear outshut. Each former house (now 1 house) has 2 rooms at the front originally with cross passages between the rooms. It is difficult to decide which house is older. It is likely that both houses are on older sites and that there has been successive rebuilding. The walls may in fact be partly C17. Exterior: 2 storeys. Overall 4 window south-east front. Each house has a nearly symmetrical 2 window front with approximately central doorway. Probably C18 openings. C20 doors, circa late C19 or C20 4-pane horned sashes. Right-hand house has first floor windows grouped closer. Right-hand ground floor opening was originally larger and has C17 chamfered lintel and chamfered jamb on the right. The other ground floor opening of this house was also originally larger. Left-hand house has C17 chamfered lintel over the doorway. Interior: Except for the large fireplaces, at least one domed granite oven and some C18 moulded ceiling beams, most of the carpentry and joinery is C19 or C20. Roof structure not inspected.
