3/11 Stowe Barton, outbuildings - adjoining at north and west and wall adjoining at south GV II

Farmhouse. C18. Slatestone rubble and polyphant ashlar, polyphant and local brick dressings, slate roofs. Local brick chimneys at gable ends and rear local brick chimney with 4 flues. 2 storey main range is single depth with rear right lean-to partly raised into 2-storey rear addition. Rear kitchen wing under gabled slate roof forms T plan. Outbuilding under lower hipped slate roof adjoins left gable end of main range and is partly used as house accommodation at first floor level. Main range has slightly off-centre gabled stone porch added in the late C19. Porch has cornice supported by 4 granite monolith columns, probably reused, outer columns have roll mouldings at base, stone cartouche containing Grenville arms below Sun Fire Insurance sign in porch gable, 6 panel entrance door under rectangular fanlight. All casements to front have 6 panes per light, ground floor windows have dressed polyphant architraves. Ground floor window left, 3-light casement; ground floor hall window to left of porch consists of one 2-light, one 3-light, one 2-light casement with common architrave. Similar window to right of porch with outer casements blocked. Ground floor window right larger 3-light casement. First floor windows under flat local brick arches, 5 in all: 3-light, 3-light, 2-light, 3-light, 3-light. Interior: hall has Delabole slate floor and large polyphant ashlar fireplace with segmental arch springing from imposts with abaci of square section. Folding shutters to casements. Ground floor room right has C19 fireplace of soft wood with panels inset with gesso decoration, folding shutters to casements and deep bolection-moulded skirting board. Outbuilding adjoining at west, partly slatestone rubble, partly local brick, has cobbled floor, beam for cider press, and sawpit. First floor partition walls in outbuilding stud with local brick nogging, principals to roof halved and pegged. Stables with loft over adjoining kitchen at north slatestone rubble with gabled slate roof and external stone stair to loft at north gable end. Stable has cobbled floor, timber partitions and timber mangers. Some casements, reused from farmhouse, in loft and stable. Piggery in lean-to adjoining north wall stable has 6 entrances, bolted slate compartments, and wooden troughs and mangers. Ramping English bond brick garden wall with brick coping to south of Stowe Barton probably part of the gardens of Stowe, included for group value. Stowe Barton is said to have been erected in 1739 when the old service quarters to Stowe were dismantled. Stowe Barton is on or close to the site of the stables at Stowe, the home of the Grenville family, built in 1679 and demolished in 1739.
