3/8 Terrace walls, steps and gate-piers - at east of Bochym Manor House
GV II
Terrace walls, steps and gate-piers. Probably circa 1699 (when the parlour wing was extended). Serpentine rubble with serpentine and granite dressings. Plan of 2 principal formal rectangular enclosures on 2 levels but lower level slightly terraced probably in the C19. Taller walling at north (possibly planted with vines originally). All walling with dressed copings. An ancient and very large mulberry tree survives at the lower terrace near a spring, adapted as well with rockery in the C19. The entrances align east west towards doorway of main range of house. Three pairs of gate-piers; the lower ones (east) by the rockery are C19 but the others are original. The gate-piers between the terraces have dressed stone settles built into and at each side of the piers, all integral with the walls and at the top of 4 concentric semi- circular steps, and 3 straight steps with nosings between piers. The piers nearest to the house have ramped copings to either side. The original piers have pyramidal caps and all have ball finials. A rare survival of late C17 formal garden plan.
