GV II

Lodge to manor house entrance and associated gate-piers. 1851 (datestone). Serpentine ashlar with granite dressings for architectural details. Cruciform dry Delabole slate roof with coped gable ends and central serpentine ashlar chimney. Cruciform plan with small porches in the 2 front angles, mirrored by small square- plan projections in the rear angles. Principal room in wing with gable facing drive. Each gable end has canted bay window. Single storey. Each wing of the cross has a gable end with stone coping, a ball finial, and a stone canted bay window with stone mullions and transoms; a small gable over the bay window has stone coping, ball finial, moulded corbelled kneelers and oval oculus with hood-mould. All the window have original patterned leaded glass panes. In the angles to left and right of the front wing are small stone porches with coped gables to front and side with ball finials and moulded pointed arch doorway to front of left-hand porch with hood-mould, and narrow square-headed opening to side also with hood-mould; over the doorway a stone coat of arms and with original ledged door. Rising from the intersection of the roof is a tall chimney stack also cruciform on plan and with chamfered cornice. Interior very complete and unaltered including fine hammer beam roof (cf. Church of Saint Corentin) in the principal room. (This room is said to have been used for estate business meetings). Gate-piers are rockfaced ashlar, square-on-plan, with dressed granite pyramidal caps surmounted by ball finials. A remarkably complete Victorian lodge with some good quality details including the glazing and roof structure which are particularly notable.
