5/103 Reen Manor House (formerly
30.5.67 listed as Reen Manor
GV II
Manor house. Probably late Medieval extended in the C17, datestone 1656 and initials
E. C. (for Edward Cottey). Granite and killas rubble walls with some dressed granite.
Some slate-hanging. Grouted scantle slate roofs with rubble stacks over the gable
ends (external stack on left) and external truncated lateral stack to left wall of
rear wing towards rear.
Plan: L-shaped plan. Front range has 2-room-plan house on the left with lobby
entrance between the rooms, and a C17 (datestone 1656) extension on the right. The
presumably original front range of the house has very thick walls but has been partly
rebuilt probably in the C18. At right angles behind the left-hand room is a deep 2-
room-plan wing built (or remodelled) in 2 phases. It is possible that this is the
original range remodelled from a former 3-room and through passage house. The C17
house is linked to the older house by a high screen wall with the dated doorway on
its left. The house was probably a 2-room plan (now 1 room at the front and extended
at the rear) and is linked at the right-hand end to a former stair tower of the
adjoining Medieval or C16 barn (qv).
Exterior: 2 storeys. Original part of house (left) has symmetrical 3-window, south-
west front with central doorway. Old 6-panel door, stone rubble porch. C20 windows
in C18 or C19 openings spanned by granite lintels inserted in the C20. Some re-used
C17 or earlier chamfered masonry. Adjoining, right of this front is a chamfered
granite doorway with pyramid stops, hoodmould and inscription to lintel: 1656 EC.
Farther right is the probable original rear wall of the C17 house. Old opening at
ground floor left has probable reused ships timber as internal lintel.
Interior: Probably C18 fireplace in left-hand room has cloam oven partly blocked;
fireplace in rear wing has oven projection. Otherwise circa mid C19 or C20 features
where inspected.
