Upham Cottage

II

Cottage, formerly 2 cottages. Late C17 - early C18. Plastered cob on rubble
shootings; cob or stone rubble stacks, one disused, the other with a C19 brick
chimney shaft; slate roof (originally thatch).
Pair of adjoining 1-room plan cottages facing north now united to a single house.
Each room has a projecting end stack but the one to the right (west) has apparently
been rebuilt and is now disused. 2 storeys.
Once-symmetrical 2-window front with a third ground floor window blocking the former
doorway into the left cottage. All the windows are late C19 - early C20 casements
with glazing bars; that first floor right may be a little earlier. The door to the
left of centre now contains a C20stable-type door. Roof is gable-ended.
Interior shows mostly original plain carpentry detail. Both rooms have heavy axial
beams which are roughly soffit-chamfered with runout stops (the left beam includes
one straight cut stop). The right beam has been cut through by the C20 stair. The
left fireplace is stone rubble with a rough oak lintel but the right fireplace is
blocked and apparently rebuilt. The roof was not inspected but, according to the
owner, is original only over the left room.
