5/26 Parish Church of St. 20.2.67 Michael and All Angels

GV II*

Parish church, C11 and C13, altered in C14, C15 and C19. Flint rubble with some admixture of freestone, and freestone dressings. Roofs tiled. Nave, late C11. Chancel C13. North wall of nave rebuilt C14. Bell turret at west end of nave, C15. Restored, part of south wall of nave rebuilt, north vestry and south porch added, C19. The chancel (7.8 x 7 metres) has a C19 east window. In the south wall are 2 windows, the eastern a single round- headed light, C19 externally, plastered internally, the western C19. Between the windows is a C19 doorway, and between that and the eastern window is the C13 head of a lancet window, visible externally, blocked internally. There is no channel arch. The nave (11.8 x 6.5 metres) has in the north wall 2 windows. The eastern is C15, of 2 cinquefoiled lights with a quatrefoil in a 4-centred head, much restored and with a re-set moulded label with head stops, C14. The western window is early C14, of 2 cinquefoiled lights in a 2-centred head with a moulded label, partly restored; it has 2 wrought-iron grills, incomplete at the top. Between the windows is the C14 north doorway with moulded jambs and hollow moulded shallow 2-centred arch; above it is a small window with shallow segmental head and wrought-iron grill, now covered by the C19 vestry; the internal arch has a shallow 2-centred head, plain chamfered. In the south wall is a single round-headed light, C19 externally, plastered internally; further west is the late C11 south doorway with plain jambs, semi- circular arch and grooved and chamfered imposts. The window in the west wall is C19. The 7-canted roof of the chancel is of unusually shallow-pitch. Thin collars are lap-jointed to the rafters; the collar-braces are also thin, and are tenoned at both ends. The walls seem to have spread, distorting the roof. Most of the ashlar-pieces have been re-set. The date is uncertain. The nave roof is in 4 bays, 7-canted as in the chancel, but with 2 collars to each rafter couple, and fully tenoned. The wallplates are moulded with waves and beaks and embattled, C14, severed at the west end for an inserted bell-turret. The four posts and east tiebeam of the turret have double hollow-chamfer mouldings, with arch braces, and saltire bracing at the sides, late C15 or early C16. The turret is weatherboarded, with a shingled spire. There are 3 bells, of which one is inscribed 'John Aylet Gave Me In the Vorchip (worship) Of the Trinite Ao. 1523'. The communion rail is moulded with turned balusters, intermediate balusters removed, mid C17. The font has an octagonal bowl with moulded lower edge, plain stem, 2 staples, C14, and cover with shaped cross- piece as handle, C17. In the southwest window of the chancel there are 3 foliated quarries and fragments of C14 glass. There is a piscina in the north wall of the nave, at the east end, with hollow chamfered 2-centred head and foiled drain, early C14, drain broken. Poor box is made from a C15 or C16 moulded post, hollow and fixed to the floor of the nave, with a lid, cross-straps and staples, C17. The pulpit is octagonal with ribbed trumpet-stem, moulded top and lower rails, sides with traceried panels, embattled rail and quatrefoil lower panels, buttresses at angles, octagonal stem-post with moulded capital, early C16, and C19 base. Moulded rails of the early C16 are incorporated in C19 seating.
