SOUTH HILL SX 37 SW 2/237 Treven GV II
Farmhouse, now house. Circa late C16 wing on south west extended on north east in circa.1706. Datestone 1 7 0 6. Possibly extended for the Foot family. Further D W F datestone on north east wing WH possibly relating to alterations. Stone rubble with 1831 slate galletting. Slate and ragslate roofs with gable end on south east and hipped end on north east. Rendered rear lateral hall stack to south west wing, incorporated in later outshut. Brick shaft to projecting stack on south gable end serving inner room and brick shaft in ridge at junction of 2 wings. L-shaped plan. South west C16 wing probably 3 rooms with through passage with hall, probably open. Floor inserted in circa early C17 with rear lateral stack. Heated inner room, now combined with hall. Lower end unheated. Stair projection to rear around rear lateral stack. Circa early C18 wing on north east projecting in 'L' shape plan from lower end of main range. 2 storeys, asymmetrical 5-window front. North east elevation of C16 range, 2-window front. Ground floor with C19 3-light casement to left with glazing bars. Chamfered timber lintel. In centre, blocked opening beneath timber lintel with early/mid C20 French windows adjoining on right. Both beneath slate hood. C20 lean-to porch in angle of 2 wings, stone rubble with slate roof. Above, C19 3-light casement with glazing bars and late C19 4-pane sash to right. North west elevation of early C18 wing, 3-window front. Ground floor with C19 3-light casement with glazing bars beneath dressed stone and granite arch. Dressed stone arch over plank door with glazed panel to right of centre and dressed stone and granite arch to right with C20 window. Above C19 2-light casement with glazing bars, late C19 4-pane sash and C20 window in earlier opening on right. 2 outer windows with granite cills. Datestone 1 7 0 6 between second and third window decorated with D W F 2 hearts, possibly signifying wedding stone. Datestone to right WM with pointed head. Lean-to on right-hand hipped end. 1831 Interior. C16 range with through passage. Lower room unheated now dairy. Screen between dairy and through passage replaced. Bressumer above heavily chamfered with ornate ogee stops visible on north east. Later fireplace to rear lateral stack with brick arch. Circa C18 dressed stone arch to fireplace and smoking chamber on south east gable end. Cloam oven. Heavy chamfered ceiling beams with run-out stops. Winder stairs continue around rear wall of rear lateral stack. Later timber treads probably with original stone treads below. First floor levels change with slightly lower floor over hall and inner room. Small fireplace in north west gable end with chamfered granite lintel. Roof timbers, over lower end, 2 raised cruck trusses with heavy unchamfered principals, morticed and tennoned at apex. Trenched purlins and unchamfered slightly cambered collars, dovetailed into principals. Diagonal set ridge. Roof timber have been creosoted. However possible indication of smoke blackening on second truss. Further 4 pairs of principals above hall and inner room sealed with only base of feet visible. Appear slightly curved. Qv. tombchest of John Foot of Treven, 1 metre to west of south porch of church of St Sampson, South Hill.
