Farmhouse. Circa early to mid C17, extended in circa mid C18. Partly remodelled in mid C19. Stone rubble. C17 range slate-hung with cement-washed scantle slate roof with gable ends. Ridge of roof raised and pitch of rear slope altered when service rooms were added to rear and incorporated in integral outshut. Stone rubble chimney stacks with brick shafts on front slope of roof at gable ends. C18 range of stone rubble with high plinth. Higher slate roof with gable ends with brick end chimney stacks. C17 range possibly remains of much larger house. 2 rood and through passage plan, now altered with front entrance blocked and screen at higher side of passage removed. The 2 rooms were probably one kitchen and parlour and heated by end chimney stacks. Extended to rear in circa early C19 with parallel 2-storey range containing service rooms beneath catslide roof. C17 range extended or remodelled at lower end with C18 range with entrance hall and stair to rear and further room at lower end heated by end chimney stack with store or dairy to rear. 2 storeys regular 4 and 2 window front. C17 range at higher end on left with 2 C19 large 4-pane sashes flanking central blocked entrance. First floor with 4 C19 4-pane sashes beneath segmental arches. Range at lower end of 2 storeys. Entrance on left with large stone Doric porch. C19 panelled door. Double sash to right beneath dressed stone arch. First floor with two 4-pane sashes beneath dressed stone arches. Interior C17 range with C19 fittings intact. C19 stair inserted at lower side of through passage. Slight plank and muntin screen to lower side of through passage survives. First floor with several C18 2-panel doors including 1 with fielded panelling. Circa C19 plank and muntin screens at top of stairs. Early to mid C17 Roof comprising 5 trusses with chamfered principals halved, lapped and pegged at apex. Chamfered collars with dovetailed notched lapped joints. Some collars replaced. Feet of principals boxed in. Circa C19 superstructure raising ridge and spanning rear outshut. C19 range with unusual plasterwork. Central rose of ceiling to ground floor reception room decorated with sheath of corn, rake and flowers. Floral trail in circle surrounding. Cornice decorated with vine leaves and stylised acanthus leaves. C19 stair with wreathed rail and square balusters. First floor landing with groin vaulted ceiling with simple plasterwork. Roof structure of later range inaccessible. Domesday manor, held by Aelfeva prior to 1066. Passed to Hywis family then to Colshills. In 1332 and 1374 licences were granted for an oratory and in 1376 for a chapel. (site 19205094). The field 'Chapel Meadow' is extanct. Shortly after 1483 Raphael passed to the Copplestone family who sold it to the Speccolts. When Sir Jonathan Phillips of Launceston, owner of Raphael Manor died, the Phillips Estate Act of 1813 enabled property on the estate, previously held on life leases, to be sold freehold for the first time 700 years.
