GV II
Village institute. In 1911 The clock and tower were erected by parishioners of Maker
and Rame to commemorate the coronation of George V, as an addition to an earlier C19
building. Some C20 alterations. Sandstone rubble with limestone dressings. Slate
roof with raised coped verged and crestings, brick gable end stack to left. Probably
2-room plan.
Front to Market Street of 2 storeys and 2 windows, pilasters, rusticated at ground
floor, plain at first floor rising to kneelers. At first floor, 4-pane sashes in
stone surrounds. Ground floor has round-headed window with rusticated voussoirs and
keystone, round-headed 6-pane sash, formerly door; door to right in similar
architrave. String course over ground floor. Right side has C20 external stair to
door at first floor to right, 4-pane sash to left, parapet verge ramped up to chimney
(truncated). 2-storey clock tower to right, with round headed windows, blind to
inner and outer sides, 6-pane sash to front, curved string course over and pilasters.
Clock face to each side to top, hipped bellcast roof with weathervane. Sea front has
C20 balconies at ground and first floor, with 4-pane sashes; rendered.
Interior not inspected.
The institute is in a prominent position in Kingsand, both from the village and the
sea, and is an important feature of Kingsand.
