Pair of houses. Early C19, with C20 alterations. Rendered rubble, slate roof with
brick gable end stacks and ridge stack.
The pair of houses has an overall 3-room plan, with passage between the left and
centre rooms. 2 storeys, 5 windows, arranged in 2 pairs to left and one to right
through both storeys, all C20 2-light casements with cambered heads; in the centre
of the paired windows, a gabled porch with bargeboards and C20 double doors. French
window replaces the casements to the right of the porch. Deep eaves on brackets.
Right gable end has half-glazed door and 2-light casement at first floor. Left
gable end has C20 conservatory attached. Single storey addition to rear left.
Interior: Not inspected. Upstream and Garden Cottage were part of the kitchen
garden buildings for Mount Edgcumbe. John Swete's diary for 1780 mentions the
"Village of Emptycombe near the new garden of Lord Mount Edgcumbe beneath the old
round tower...".
