II

Watermill. Late C18 - early C19 with few later alterations. Slatestone rubble with
hipped roof in slate and corrugated asbestos.
Plan: 2-storey main mill, with addition to left side also of 2 storeys with cellar
under. The main mill building has an overshot waterwheel to the rear, with the
tailrace channeled around the right side of the front of the building; there may have
been a secondary wheel at the right side of the building powered from the tailrace.
The front of the mill has a door and window opening at ground floor, 2 window
openings at first floor with cambered stone heads and an upper loading door to the
loft at 2nd floor level. Straight joint to the addition to left, with 3-light window
opening with granite lintel at ground floor, similar cellar window opening. At the
left side, door and window opening, 2 windows at first floor and gabled dormer above.
Right side has upper loading door with cambered stone head; ground floor level partly
rendered and formerly enclosed by a lean-to structure; opening in the wall, possibily
for the watershaft of a secondary wheel, with pit below. The rear has a single
storey lean-to addition; the cast iron rim of the waterwheel remains, with some
wooden spokes and cast iron watershaft; the wheel would have been driven from a
wooden launder.
Interior: To the rear at ground floor level, the watershaft, pit wheel, wallower and
great spur wheel survive. No machinery survives at first floor level, except 3
furrowed millstones.
This is a good example of a corn mill, with spout floor, stone floor and bin floor;
there is a trap door between the ground and first floors of the addition which would
have been used for storage, and is unusual in having a cellar.
