Limekilns adjoining Higher Cliff

GV
II

Disused limekilns. Circa early C19. Stone rubble with round-headed dressed stone arches. Built adjoining Higher Cliff Cottage (qv Higher Cliff, Sandplace). Two circular flues serve the four grates of the kilns. Two round dressed stone arches to front openings, left-hand arch taller than that of right. Right-hand arch leads to opening for grate on left-hand side and round arch on right to accommodate the projection of the chimney breast on the left-hand gable end of Higher Cliff. Left-hand dressed stone arch on front elevation leads to openings for grates to right and left. Further opening in left-hand side wall with grate served by left-hand flue. Built into side of hill. Cobbled path leads from remains of quay on canal to east, up slope to top of kilns, providing access for top loading. Left-hand flue stone lined with brick repairs. Right-hand flue brick lined. Limekilns were served by the Liskeard and Looe Union Canal, authorised in 1825 to link Liskeard with tidal water at Looe. As canal traffic expanded, the canal was replaced by the Liskeard and Caradon Railway, authorised by Act of 1843 and opened in 1846.
