REDCAR KIRKLEATHAM NZ 52 SE 4/54 Gates, gatepiers, wall, steps and mounting block, east of Church of St. Cuthbert. G.V. II
Retaining wall, mid C18; raised, and steps and mounting block added c.1763. Gatepiers and north end of wall with piers, c.1740, the former relocated in late C18, latter partly rebuilt early C20. Late C18 gates, renewed 1934. Sandstone; Coade stone finials; brick mounting block and raised parts of walls. Coursed random rubble north end of wall. Steel gates. Walls run between south-east corner of churchyard and northernmost pier. Vermiculate-rusticated gatepiers on roll-moulded plinths. Pedestal finials have carved skulls and crossed bones in panels on east and west faces; and flaming Roman oil lamps on ogee stems. 2-leaf gates, side panels and overthrow, up 4 steps with coped string and glinters. Segmental overthrow has central winged angel heads, arrowhead crestings and scrolls decorated with water leaves. Similar ornament in double lockrail of gates and in flanking panels. Fleur-de-lys ornament above lockrails and waterleaf pendants suspended from top rails. Chamfered copings on walls, except at north end. Remains of similar piers, with short ramped ashlar walls adjoining inner faces, at each end of north part of wall.
