WILTON WILTON NZ 51 NE 7/111 Stable block, c.l0m west of Wilton Castle G.V. II

Stable block, mid/late C19, with slightly later extensions. Coach house now used as swimming pool, stables used as workshops and stores. Hammer-dressed sandstone. Welsh slate roofs with stone ridge and gable copings. On 3 sides of courtyard open on east side. 2 storeys. Central 4-bay coach house with slightly-projecting 2-bay gabled centre. Segmental-pointed carriage arches, now glazed. Chamfered 2-light casements on first floor. String courses between floors and below eaves. Circular tablet in chamfered square panel under hoodmould in gable. Hipped and gabled roof with ridge stacks. Short one-bay recessed links connect coach house with 5-bay projecting stable wings on north and south sides of courtyard. Chamfered openings hold casements and boarded doors. String course between floors. One-bay lean-to extension at end, and hip-roofed stable adjoining rear of south wing. L-plan, one-storey stable range adjoins north west corner. North range: 6-bay cart shed now converted to stables. 6 boarded and stable doors with overlights and six 9-pane sash windows with glazing bars. East range: 5-bay stable with boarded doors, and 6-pane sash windows with glazing bars, in chamfered surrounds. Range of potting sheds and bothies adjoining south-west corner of stable block, range of cart sheds to west, and late C20 single-storey extension at rear of coach house are not of special interest.
