Details
ORMESBY LADGATE LANE, south side NZ 51 NW 6/35 West Lodges, with gates, 5.5.52 gatepiers and flanking walls. (Formerly listed as Gateway and Lodges at Ormesby Hall). - II*
Pair of lodges with gates, gatepiers and flanking walls; mid C18, with c.1770/75 panels and finials. At entrance to former driveway of Ormesby Hall (q.v.). Sandstone ashlar, painted stone pedestals; slate roofs and renewed wrought iron gates. Palladian with Adam-style panels and finials: Central gatepiers, linked to flanking lodges by short walls which have round-headed pedestrian gateways with archivolts, plain impost bands and single-leaf gates. Lodges 1½ storeys, single-bay open-pedimented fronts. Entered from doorways in returns. Each has chamfered rustication below continuous impost band of round-arched recess holding blocked round-headed window with voussoirs. Panels ornamented with paterae and husk garlands in tympana; dentil cornices. Single-storey, single-bay, mock wings adjoin ends of lodges and have similar recesses. Blocked doorways in inner returns, with moulded surrounds, that in left lodge missing. Continuous dentilled eaves cornice. Rear of lodges similar to fronts, with blocked openings including windows in tympana. Gatepiers have chamfered rustication and support corniced pedestals without plinths, ornamented with paterae and husk garlands. Sculptured lion-head finials pierced by spears (Pennyman crest) now missing (stored at Ormesby Hall). Double-leaf gates have curved rails and spear-head verticals. Walls flank the mock wings and curve out to the road, terminating in chamfered-rusticated piers with ogee saucer-domed caps. Disused and dilapidated at time of resurvey.
