Details

SJ 68 NW APPLETON C.P. BIRCHDALE ROAD (North Side) 3/6 Former Canal Warehouse.

II

Warehouse (on south bank of Bridgewater Canal) probably late C18 with early C19 extension. Brown brick in English garden wall bond. Roof replaced in corrugated asbestos. 4 storeys (of which one is a semi-basement to road). Symmetrical front to canal has a vertical brick joint at centre to 4th storey lintel level, a circular pitch-hole in gable and a pair of loading doors to each side on each storey with combined lintels and cills of timber and remnants of loading balconies; most of the boarded doors are altered. Right side (from canal) has loading doors to 2nd, 3rd and 4th storeys and windows to each side on each storey under round brick arches except top left window which is square headed and blocked. Round-arched openings in left half of face to Birchdale Road; a central vertical brick joint (as on canal face) suggests that right (east) half was added, probably early C19. Attached weatherboarded shed is not of special interest.
