Details

AUDLEM C.P. (Off) CHESHIRE STREET SJ 64 SE 8/3 Cemetery Chapels - - II Cemetery chapels. 1860-80. Red random bond brick with diapering of blue bricks and bands of encaustic tiles with alternating bands of red and blue slates to the roof. Two funeral chapels connected by a range of porches, archway and bell tower. Road front: projecting plinth common to whole building with chamfered ashlar top. Pointed archway at right of centre with double chamfered rebate with a gable above which has a row of patterned encaustic tiles sandwiched between rows of blue bricks. To the gable apex is an octagonal panel in relief showing Christ in the act of blessing the congregation. To the left of this is the square bell tower which has a clasping buttress to the left hand corner and a quatrefoil to its lower body with ashlar surround and a pointed lancet above and a louvred lancet above that to the bell chamber. Square spire above of slate. The chapel porches lie to either side of this with lancet windows. To right and left of this central range both chapels have gable ends. Both chapels have angle buttresses to the corners and a central double doorway with pilarettes to either side with crocketed capitals and bands of encaustic tiles at the level of the capitals. Chamfered door reveals and ashlar hood moulds with figurehead label stops. The buttresses have ashlar offsets and to the gables are windows of plate tracery having three lancet lights to the lower body and circular lights above. Bands of encaustic tiles at the level of their sills and at the springing of the arches. Bands of blue brick to the upper body of both gables and crosses to the apexes. The sides have lancet lights with buttresses between and the western gable ends (ritual East) have paired lancets with an oval light above. The interior of both chapels has diapering and bands of encaustic tiles to the walls and floors of richly patterned encaustic tiling and panelled wooden roofs.
