GV
Pair of farmbuildings: c1760 for the Stanley-Massey family. Flemish and English garden wall bond red brick. Hipped Welsh slate roofs. Two ranges on either side of courtyard, joined by brick walls. West range has 2-storey, symmetrical 8-bay, north-west front. Ashlar red sandstone plinth, simple brick cornice. Cambered heads to flush 12-pane sashes with heavy glazing bars and stone sills. At right end is inserted doorway. 2-storey, 5-bay south-east front has 2 original doorways to left, large inserted central opening and opening to right with steel lintels. At right end are steps to upper storey, which shows 2 circular pitch holes and 3 inserted loading bays, and sets of diamond shaped ventilation patterns. Interior: brick partition walls have large semi-circular headed openings in upper storey. Sash windows are blocked off. East range has 2-storey, 5-bay north-west front. Brick cornice. Line of altered original doorways below and 2 circular pitch holes and 4 inserted openings above. Left end a modern reconstruction. Interior: of no interest. As with the Orchards (qv) the west range was built as a wing of the now demolished Puddington Hall, in this case with a facade hiding its agricultural function.
