Pair of parallel locks, south lock circa l775 by James Brindley, north lock added 1830 (Consultant Thomas Telford). Blue and red bricks with stone dressing and wooden gates. Both locks have raking abutments on their west ends and there are attractive little cantilever bridges with arched supports, circular struts and central gaps, for tow rope passage, fronting the lower (west) gates. The south west gates were replaced in timber in 1986 and the north west gates, also in timber, in 1980. The upper single gates (east) are thought to have both been replaced in timber in 1980 but only the north east gate is dated. Some replacement of stone lock edging in concrete.
