16/18 Timber Cottage
II
Cottage. C16 and C17. Timber framed exposed and rendered infill. Long straw thatch roof half hipped. Inserted C17 red brick ridge stack. Single range plan of four bays. Two bays to the road are the solar end possibly of an open hall which was removed and replaced in C17. One storey and attic to two bays at east end. Middle rail and weathered studwork of substantial scantling. Blocked lobby entry doorway on north side. One small window opening on south side and two modern wood windows at ground floor. Bays at west end have studs continuous from sole to wall plate. One storey and attic. One dormer on the west side. Interior: Cambered tie beam on west side of chimney bay. The chimney and a subsidiary tie beam forming the east side of the chimney bay were inserted C17. Braced wall frame. Ground floor ceilings throughout are C17 with joists laid on edge. Stop chamfered lintel to hearth.
