The Retreat
GV II*
Detached house. Late C18. Render or stucco on probable rubble;
dry slate hipped roof with modillion cornice at the front,
returned slightly at either end; large brick axial stacks.
Square double-depth plan plus single-storey wing on the left.
3 storeys; symmetrical 3-window front. Plinth, mid-floor
strings, rusticated quoins and hoodmoulds with central shell
motifs over the ground and 1st-floor windows. Original paired
hornless sashes with glazing bars. Central doorway with fluted
Ionic columns and dentilled pediment; original panelled door.
INTERIOR: good original internal features include: staircase
with turned balusters and column newels; round-arched doorways
with panelled doors; panelled window shutters; moulded ceiling
cornices; chimneypieces, one with original grate; segmental
arch to end of 1 front room and rear room with entablature
carried on paired Tuscan columns (information from former list
description).
