Details
TL 3244 BASSINGBOURN-CUIf-KNEESkORTH NORTH END (West Side) 15/45 No 15 (Church Cottage) GV II
House. Circa 1500 with C17 and late C17 and C19 alterations and additions. C20 renovation and addition. Timber-framed, exposed and plastered. Thatched roof. Red brick ridge stack and end stack to west. Two storeys, gable to the street. Original three unit plan with open hall of one bay remodelled in early C17 by inserted floor into parlour and hall, and brick and timber-framed back to back chimney; late C17 extension to east gable and C19 end stack added to west. South elevation. Glazed entrance door (modern entrance in north elevation), four ground floor sixteen-paned hung sash windows and four first floor casement windows. Interior: Substantial timber- frame exposed of original building with two four-centred arched door heads one in situ, smoke blackened collar-rafter roof. C17 stop-chamfered cross-beams to inserted floor and bressumer to chimney. Exposed frame of chimney a rare feature. (Redundant lap joint may indicate an original aisle to the north). The building was divided in the C19 into agricultural workers cottages, its original plan is similar to No 26 North End, Bassingbourn-cum-Kneesworth.
