TL 3856 COMBERTON BARTON ROAD (South Side)
No 16 (Hawks Farmhouse) 9/25 II 31. 8.62 House. Mid-C16 and late C17 parlour wing. Timber-framed, roughcast rendered on brick plinth. Tiled roof formerly thatched with ridge stack ofgault brick to upper courses and red brick to lower. Plan of three principal bays and narrower fire bay and entry bay. Cross-passage between hall and service end to the left hand. One storey and attic. One dormer. Three casements, including one of three-leaded lights, late C17, with original fastenings. Doorway opposite the stack with C19 panelled door. Bread oven projects from rear wall. Parlour Wing: added to front c.1680 (see similar brickwork and banding to extension dated 1687 at Manor Farmhouse, qv). Timber-framed side walls and brick, gable end now painted. Tiled roof with parapet gable end on kneelers and original red brick plastered stack with moulded string-course. Two storeys and attic. Band at eaves height and between storeys. Four symmetrically placed casements with original diamond mullions and saddle bars, but later glazing. Side walls have original attic gables and one leaded light casement to each storey except for the ground floor which has one of three-lights, similar to that of the main range. Inside: Hall has intersecting main beams, stop chamfered and of substantial scantling, but the floor of the right hand bay is much later and lighter in scantling and is a possible replacement. Abutting inglenook hearths. Four centred chamfered arch to one service doorway leading off the through-passage. Through-purlin roof. R.C.H.M West Cambs., mon.(16)
