TL 4862-4962 HORNINGSEA ST JOHNS LANE (South Side)

17/80 CHURCH OF ST PETER 31.8.62


Parish church. Early C12. Extended in late C12 with arcades to north and south aisles, three bays of south aisle remains. Chancel early C13, and west tower. North arcade rebuilt C14 with aisle extended eastwards; south aisle later C14, and porch. Restorations c.1850, 1865 and 1890. Walls of Barnack limestone and limestone ashlar, flint and clunch rubble and red brick repairs covered by cement render. Continuous gable roof of chancel and nave plain tiled, low pitched aisle and porch roofs of lead. Tower of four stages with chamfered strings; angle buttresses and side buttress of three stages. Brick parapet c.1825 with angle gargoyles. Two light C14 window in two-centred arch. South aisle with diagonal and side buttresses of two stages. Reduced parapet. Three windows; C19 window of two-lights to west of porch, early C16 eliptical-headed, five-light window with sunk spandrels in square headed arch, and late C14 pointed, two-light window with trefoiled spandrels. Late C14 south doorway with two-centred head and continuous moulded jambs enriched with paterae and carving of pelican in piety. South porch C19 low-pitched roof replacing original parapetted gable roof; gargoyles of grotesque lions and restored archway. Chancel of reused Barnack ashlar below cill height, sealed lowside window with late C15 three-light wondow in four-cnetred arch, C13 doorway with trefoiled-headed lancet above, late C14 window of two cinquefoil-headed lights and quatrefoil, and trefoiled lancet-light to east. Interior. Architectural details and monuments see R.C.H.M. East Cambs. Roofs rebuilt C19. Pulpit c.1600 restored with linenfold panels. Late C15 oak pews. Font early C13. Some late C14 and C15 glass.
