TL 4070 WILLINGHAM CHURCH STREET (North Side)

11/142 No. 29 31.8.62 (Church Farmhouse)

II

House, C15 and c.1670. Timber framed, pebbledash rendered, with long straw thatched roof, half-hipped, with grey, gault brick ridge stack. Plan of single range and lobby entry but part of the crosswing of C15 house remains at right hand. Kitchen wing at rear is also C17 and framed. Two storeys with attics. The crosswing is jettied at first floor and has one window to each storey. The main range has two C19 flush frame horizontal sliding sashes at first floor. Doorway to lobby entry with six panelled door. One hung sash and one horizontal sliding sash at ground floor. Interior: The main beam to a ground floor room is carried on a pad similar to that of No. 10 George Street dated 1672 (q.v.). There are abutting inglenooks, now blocked and some typical late C17 framing with shallow bracing visible at first floor. The roof is of clasped side purlin construction with uncarpentered timber. One of the upper rooms was used as a cheese chamber. The crosswing has ceiling joists of substantial scantling laid flat and unmoulded. Inspection of the roof revealed that it had been rebuilt in c.1670 but sooted rafters from the C15 roof had been re-used. A small staircase, early C18, closed-string with vase shaped balusters remains.
