C17/early C18 cottage. The birthplace of the poet John Clare (1793-1864).
Extended at south end in C18. Whitewashed stone rubble. Thatched roof with
gabled ends. One storey and attic. Five window range. Modern 2-light casements.
Right-hand splayed bay with thatched roof. Plank door with thatched hood.
Four eyebrow dormers. End and ridge stacks of stone, north stack heightened
in brick.
Stone tablet on front with inscription "In this cottage John Clare the poet was
born 13 July 1793. This tablet is erected by the Peterborough Museum Society
1921". Grade II* for historical associations.
