Details
TQ 2980 SW CITY OF WESTMINSTER PALL MALL SW1 81/52 Marlborough House with enclosing forecourt 5.2.70 walls and east service/ stable wing. - I Town mansion and genuine "hotel particulier". 1707-11 by Sir Christopher Wren for the first Duke of Marlborough with internal alterations by Sir William Chambers, 1771-74, and further alter- ations and extensions north and east by Sir James Pennethorne, 1861-63 for Edward, Prince of Wales. Red brick with stone dressings and quoin pilasters, the 2 attic storeys by Pennethorne as also the stable and outbuilding ranges to east. 13 bays wide with heightened flanking wings to forecourt and porte cochere by Pennethorne to centre. The forecourt is enclosed by ornamental boundary wall terminating on north axis in a handsome architectural composition with arched recess and pediments. 13 bay garden front with slightly advanced 3 bay wings. Important interior with original saloon flanked by staircase frescoed by Laguerrre, chimney pieces by Chambers, late C18 work for the 3rd Duke of Marlborough and when the Crown acquired the House in 1817 and subsequently for the Prince of Wales etc. History of the King's Works London, Vol I, N Pevsner.
